The Black Robed Regiment was the name that the British placed on the courageous and fearless American patriotic pastors during the American Revolution. Those pastors boldly proclaimed the Word of God as it applied to everything in life, whether spiritual or temporal - whether related to eternal life with Christ or to issues such as taxes, education, public policies, good government, military, or any other that the Bible addressed.
Understanding the role of clergy and the pulpit, the Rev. Charles Finney (a leading figure of the national revival known as the Second Great Awakening) reminded the ministers in his day of their historic influence in these areas:
Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation. [1]
Over recent decades, a number of forces have worked tirelessly to reduce the traditional influence of the clergy and the pulpit in America, relegating ministers to a position of cultural impotency and irrelevancy. But Romans 12:2: "Don't let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold." It is time for clergy to embrace the responsibilities that God has given them related to the nation and its culture, refuse the current trend of compartmentalization, and reclaim the extensive role that He has ordained for them.
Earlier church historians described the original Black Robed Regiment in these words.
Mighty men they were, of iron nerve and strong hand and unblanched cheek and heart of flame. God needed not reeds shaken by the wind, not men clothed in soft raiment [Matthew 11:7-8], but heroes of hardihood and lofty courage. . . .And such were the sons of the mighty who responded to the Divine call. [2]
America needs help today - she needs courageous and patriotic ministers who will provide leadership and speak out on the pressing issues of the day, whether spiritual or temporal. It is time to resurrect the Black Robed Regiment!
